Swansea City are on the verge of completing the signing of Joel Ward, the veteran defender and former Crystal Palace captain, on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Ward, 36, has been a free agent since leaving Crystal Palace in the summer, where he ended a remarkable 13-year stint at Selhurst Park. Talks are at an advanced stage, and the Welsh club is close to finalising the deal.

The versatile defender, who can operate at right-back or centre-back, will add vital experience and depth to Vitor Matos’ squad, particularly on the right side of defence where Swansea have lacked specialist options. In recent weeks, midfielder Ethan Galbraith has been deployed out of position to cover for Josh Key.

Ward also bolsters Swansea’s central defence, where the back-up options to Ben Cabango and Cameron Burgess have been thin. Kaelan Casey has provided cover, while summer signing Ricardo Santos has barely featured, making just one substitute appearance so far.

Ward played 364 games for Crystal Palace, scoring six goals, and was instrumental in helping them gain promotion to the Premier League in the 2012-13 season, his debut campaign after arriving from Portsmouth.

His final season at Palace was limited, featuring in just three games in 2024-25. He was an unused substitute in the club’s historic FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May – which he later described as a “fairytale ending” to his Palace career.

“It has been an incredible journey with so many fond memories,” Ward said in his farewell statement.
“This isn’t ‘goodbye’, it’s merely a ‘see you later’.”

Born in Hampshire, Ward began his professional career at Portsmouth, making 96 appearances, and also had a loan spell at Bournemouth early in his career.

Should the deal go through, Ward would bring leadership and Premier League know-how to a Swansea side currently seeking greater consistency in the Championship.
