Celtic Win in Germany but Europa League Dream Ends After Stuttgart Tie

Celtic delivered a rare and spirited away win in Germany but their 1 0 victory over Stuttgart was not enough to overturn the heavy first leg deficit as they bowed out of the Europa League knockout play offs.

Trailing 4 1 from the first meeting, Celtic needed something special in Stuttgart and they could not have asked for a better start. Luke McCowan stunned the home crowd by scoring after just 28 seconds, giving the Scottish champions early belief and setting up a tense European night.

It was the fastest possible statement from Martin O Neill’s much changed side. With eight alterations ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm clash, Celtic showed attacking intent from the first whistle. McCowan’s early strike also added a slice of history, marking another opening minute goal for the club in European competition.

However, the task remained enormous. Stuttgart dominated possession and repeatedly pushed into the final third. By the midway point of the first half, Celtic had barely threatened again while the hosts were piling on pressure.

The German side thought they had equalised twice. Chris Fuhrich found the net only to be denied by the offside flag. Later, Deniz Undav also had a goal ruled out for the same reason. Despite the pressure and the narrow margin, Celtic’s defensive resilience held firm.

Goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo was central to that resistance. With first choice Kasper Schmeichel rested, the Finnish stopper produced a string of key saves to preserve the clean sheet. His performance is certain to spark debate ahead of the crucial derby against Rangers.

Celtic’s backline also stepped up under intense scrutiny. Dane Murray impressed with a vital block to deny Undav at close range, while captain Callum McGregor completed the full 90 minutes despite the heavy rotation elsewhere in the squad.

Going forward, Celtic relied largely on counter attacks. Daizen Maeda and Junior Adamu provided pace and movement, and on another night Maeda might have doubled the lead early on. Yet clear chances were scarce as Stuttgart continued to control the tempo.

In the end, the 1 0 win represented both pride and frustration. It was Celtic’s first victory on German soil in 17 attempts and a morale boosting result after last week’s humbling defeat. Yet the aggregate score ensured their European journey ended.

Now attention turns fully to domestic matters. A defining Old Firm clash awaits at Ibrox, with league implications hanging in the balance. The defensive grit shown in Stuttgart offers encouragement, but replicating that intensity against Rangers will be another stern test.

Celtic leave Europe with heads held high on the night, but with bigger battles looming at home.
