FIFA Tests ‘Out of Bounds’ Technology to Clarify Goals and Offside Calls

Share:

FIFA is testing a new piece of technology aimed at improving decision-making in key match moments, particularly when goals are scored after tight plays near the touchline. The innovation, called ‘Out of Bounds’, is designed to determine whether the ball went out of play before a goal was scored, helping officials avoid controversial decisions.

The technology was trialled during three Intercontinental Cup matches held in Qatar earlier this month as part of FIFA’s wider efforts to enhance accuracy and transparency in officiating. Close calls involving the ball leaving the field have often caused debate, and FIFA hopes this system will provide clearer evidence for referees and VAR officials.

In addition, FIFA has expanded its Real-time 3D Recreation technology to improve offside decisions. The upgraded system focuses on line-of-sight judgments, allowing officials to make quicker and clearer calls. By using advanced visual modelling, the technology helps reduce delays while making decisions easier to understand for both players and fans.

A standout feature of the new system is the introduction of two virtual camera feeds that replicate the perspectives of both goalkeepers. These feeds are available to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and television broadcasters, offering a realistic view of crucial moments leading to goals or offside decisions.

The technologies have been developed in collaboration with Hawk-Eye Innovations, a company already trusted for goal-line technology and VAR support. While the early tests have shown promise, it remains uncertain whether these innovations will be introduced into domestic leagues anytime soon.

If widely adopted, these developments could play a major role in shaping the future of football officiating.
