Guardiola plays down title talk as Man City boss demands sharper consistency

Pep Guardiola has brushed aside growing speculation around the Premier League title race, insisting his sole focus remains on improving Manchester City’s consistency rather than obsessing over the league table. Speaking ahead of City’s upcoming home clash with Fulham, the manager made it clear that constant debate about the title helps no one inside the dressing room.

Manchester City sit second in the standings and remain six points behind leaders Arsenal after a dramatic 2 1 win away at Liverpool over the weekend. While the victory kept City within reach, Guardiola dismissed suggestions that every match now feels like a final.

He expressed frustration at the narrative surrounding each game, saying the pressure of hypothetical outcomes distracts from the real task at hand. For Guardiola, preparation is about one thing only, finding the best way to beat the next opponent. That mindset, he believes, is the only route back into serious contention.

City’s recent form has been uneven by their own high standards. With only two wins from their last seven league matches, Guardiola admitted his side have not been as reliable as required during a crucial stretch of the season. Arsenal, by contrast, have taken full advantage, stringing together victories to create daylight at the top.

Despite the gap, Guardiola refused to frame the situation as a crisis. He acknowledged the distance is significant but stressed that momentum can shift quickly if City rediscover their rhythm. That starts with Fulham, a team Guardiola rates highly and one that has caused City problems in the past.

The December meeting between the sides ended in a thrilling 5 4 win for City, a match Guardiola referenced as evidence of Fulham’s growth. He praised their tactical structure, movement off the ball, and composure in possession, highlighting the work of manager Marco Silva. Guardiola described Silva as one of the most impressive coaches he faces, pointing to Fulham’s steady rise since their return to the Premier League in 2022.

There was also positive news on the team front. Midfielder John Stones is back in the squad after missing recent games with a thigh injury, adding balance and experience to the center of the pitch. Defender Abdukodir Khusanov has also been cleared to play after suffering a concussion at Anfield. Guardiola spoke warmly about the young defender’s intelligence and decision making, suggesting his influence will only grow.

Above all, Guardiola emphasized the need for consistency. He believes City have shown stretches of excellent football over the past months but failed to sustain it across full matches and sequences of games. For a side chasing a seventh league title under his leadership, that lack of continuity has been costly.

Guardiola insisted the objective is simple. Play the right way, earn results on the pitch, and let the table take care of itself. If City can raise their level week after week, he believes the points will follow.
