Kylian Mbappe Calls for Champions League Ban After Alleged Racist Remark in Lisbon

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has called for strong disciplinary action against Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni following allegations of a racist remark directed at Vinicius Jr during their Champions League playoff first leg in Lisbon.

The incident occurred shortly after Vinicius scored the decisive goal in Real Madrid’s 1 0 win at the Estadio da Luz. Television footage showed Prestianni covering his mouth with his shirt while speaking, a gesture that raised suspicions among Real Madrid players. Vinicius and teammates interpreted the comment as a racial slur, prompting an immediate reaction on the pitch.

Referee Francois Letexier halted the match for 11 minutes after activating FIFA’s anti racism protocol. The pause intensified the already heated atmosphere inside the stadium, with tensions running high when play resumed.

Mbappe was visibly furious during the confrontation and was seen challenging Prestianni on the field. Speaking after the match, the French forward said he heard the alleged remark more than once and insisted that such behaviour has no place in elite European competition.

He stated that if the allegations are proven, Prestianni should not be allowed to continue competing in the Champions League. Mbappe emphasized the responsibility players carry as role models, saying football must send a clear message that discrimination will not be tolerated.

Prestianni has denied the accusation, posting on social media that Vinicius misunderstood what he heard. The Argentine winger said he did not make any racist comment and expressed regret over the backlash and threats he claimed to have received.

The controversy comes amid ongoing scrutiny over racism in European football. Vinicius has previously been targeted with racist abuse in Spain, and his experiences have sparked wider conversations about accountability and stronger enforcement measures across competitions.

During the match in Lisbon, the atmosphere turned increasingly hostile. Vinicius and Mbappe were loudly booed whenever they touched the ball after the game resumed. Despite the tension, Real Madrid maintained composure and held onto their lead to secure a narrow advantage heading into the return leg.

UEFA has appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to investigate the matter. The governing body will review footage, reports and statements before deciding whether further action is required.

Mbappe revealed that he had considered leaving the pitch in protest but was encouraged by Vinicius to continue playing. He stressed that football must stand united against racism and that decisive action is essential to protect the integrity of the sport.

As the investigation continues, the incident has once again placed European football under the spotlight, reinforcing calls for stronger measures to combat discrimination at the highest level.
