Los Angeles FC have moved quickly ahead of the new Major League Soccer season by securing the services of Canadian international Stephen Eustaquio on a loan deal from Portuguese giants FC Porto, adding depth and experience to their midfield options. The club confirmed that the agreement runs through the end of June, with an option in place to make the move permanent later in the year.
Eustaquio will occupy an international roster spot once all formalities are completed, giving LAFC a versatile central midfielder known for his composure, tactical discipline, and leadership qualities. The 29 year old arrives with a strong European pedigree, having been a regular figure for Porto since joining the club in early 2022. During his time in Portugal, he made 156 appearances across all competitions, contributing 12 goals and 11 assists while competing in domestic league matches, cup competitions, and European tournaments.
Before establishing himself at Porto, Eustaquio built his career across several leagues and football cultures. His club journey includes spells with Torreense, Leixoes, Chaves, and Pacos Ferreira in Portugal, as well as a notable period in Mexico with Cruz Azul. That varied background has shaped him into a midfielder comfortable in high pressure environments and adaptable to different tactical systems, traits that LAFC value as they prepare for a demanding season.
At international level, Eustaquio has been a key figure for Canada over the past decade. He has earned 54 senior caps and scored four goals, representing his country at major tournaments including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2024 Copa America. His experience on the global stage is expected to translate well into MLS, where the pace and physicality of the league often challenge newcomers.
LAFC general manager John Thorrington highlighted the midfielder’s leadership and winning mentality, stressing that the signing is designed to strengthen the squad both on and off the field. The club believes Eustaquio’s ability to control tempo, break up opposition play, and distribute effectively will bring immediate balance to the midfield, particularly in high profile fixtures.
From a broader perspective, moves like this reflect MLS clubs’ increasing focus on players who combine competitive quality with global recognition. Such signings play a role not only in sporting ambitions but also in fan engagement, digital storytelling, and the expanding football economy where player profiles contribute to brand value and supporter interaction across platforms.
Eustaquio could make his LAFC debut when the club opens its campaign with a home fixture against Inter Miami on February 21. As LAFC look to challenge for silverware once again, the Canadian midfielder’s arrival signals intent and underlines the club’s strategy of blending international experience with league proven talent.
