Liverpool progressed to the FA Cup fourth round with a 4-1 win over League One side Barnsley, but the scoreline flattered the hosts in what was a tougher contest than expected at Anfield.
Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring with a stunning long-range strike, but the Hungary captain undid his good work with a moment of costly showboating that gifted Barnsley their only goal, a finish taken coolly by former Liverpool academy graduate Adam Phillips in front of the Kop.
Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane labelled Szoboszlai’s mistake “disrespectful,” suggesting he wouldn’t have risked such a move against a top-tier opponent. “Delighted for Adam, but it was a little bit disrespectful from their player,” Hourihane said. “I don’t think he does that against Chelsea or Arsenal.”
Barnsley frustrated Liverpool for large parts of the match with disciplined defending and dangerous counter-attacks. Winger Reyes Cleary caused problems and was involved in a controversial moment when he went down under a Szoboszlai challenge in the box, but no penalty was awarded.
Liverpool ultimately pulled away thanks to a strong finish. Substitute Florian Wirtz was the difference-maker late on, scoring a classy third goal before assisting Hugo Ekitiké for a fourth in stoppage time. Wirtz’s introduction lifted the hosts, who had struggled to break down Barnsley’s low block for much of the match.
Despite the error, Szoboszlai avoided further punishment, and Arne Slot’s side now advance to face Brighton in the fourth round. For Barnsley, there was pride in their performance and a goal to remember for Phillips on a special night at Anfield.
