More than three quarters of fans in the Premier League do not support the continued use of Video Assistant Referee technology, according to a new survey conducted by the Football Supporters’ Association. The findings highlight growing dissatisfaction among supporters, particularly around the impact of VAR on the matchday experience. The survey gathered responses from nearly 8000 fans across top flight clubs, revealing that 75.7 percent oppose VAR, while an overwhelming 91.7 percent believe it has diminished the spontaneous joy of celebrating goals.
The results reflect a widening gap between fan sentiment and the official stance of the league, which continues to support VAR as a tool for improving decision making accuracy. The survey, conducted between late February and late March, reinforces concerns that have persisted since VAR was introduced. Fans have consistently raised issues around delays, unclear communication, and inconsistent decisions, all of which have contributed to frustration during matches. The findings were shared with league officials and the referees’ governing body as part of ongoing discussions about the future of the system.
Supporters argue that while VAR aims to reduce human error, it has altered the emotional flow of the game. Many fans feel that moments of celebration are now overshadowed by uncertainty, as goals are often subject to lengthy reviews. The FSA pointed out that similar concerns were raised in earlier surveys, suggesting that dissatisfaction has remained steady rather than improving over time. This ongoing criticism places pressure on football authorities to reassess how VAR is implemented and communicated during matches.
In response, the Premier League defended the system, stating that VAR has significantly improved the accuracy of refereeing decisions. League data indicates that around 100 decisions are corrected each season through VAR interventions, preventing incorrect goals, missed penalties, or unjust red cards. Officials also emphasized that the Premier League applies a higher threshold for VAR involvement compared to other competitions, allowing on field referees to retain authority and reducing unnecessary interruptions to the game.
Despite defending its effectiveness, the league acknowledged that improvements are needed and confirmed that refining VAR remains a priority. Ongoing dialogue with supporters is expected to shape future adjustments, with a focus on making the system less intrusive while maintaining fairness.
