Man Utd made mistakes – Amorim on Ronaldo criticism

Rúben Amorim, head coach of Manchester United, has acknowledged that the club made significant errors in its recent past, as he responded to sharp criticism from club legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo recently told an interviewer that United lacked the structural foundation and that Amorim would not be able to perform miracles. Amorim accepted the weight of the comments, stating: “Of course, he knows and he has a huge impact in everything he says. What we need to focus on is the future. We know that we, as a club, made a lot of mistakes in the past, but we are trying to change that.”

He emphasised that dwelling on past failings is unhelpful, instead urging the club and its supporters to look ahead. He said that United are currently “changing a lot of things the structure, the way we do things, the way we want the players to behave. We are doing that, and we are improving.”

Amorim’s remarks come amid a period of improvement for United, who have strung together a four-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and are gradually climbing the table. He highlighted that missing out on European competition this season although disappointing has afforded the team more time for training, bonding and tactical consolidation.

While United’s recent form shows promise, Amorim was unflinching in admitting there is still work to be done: “We are more confident, we understand the game better, we defend better, but we know we have a lot to improve.” He pointed to goals conceded and moments of lacklustre performance as areas requiring attention.

The interaction between Ronaldo’s critique and Amorim’s response adds another chapter to United’s ongoing rebuild under the Portuguese coach. With a squad undergoing transition and the club’s ambition renewed, the attitude from the manager is clear: recognise past mistakes, then move forward with intent and structure.

As United prepare for their next major fixture, the message is consistent the focus is not on who criticised them, but on how the club responds. Amorim insists the blueprint is evolving and that United’s future depends more on what happens now than what happened before.
