Manchester United Sack Ruben Amorim After 14 Months in Charge

Manchester United have officially parted ways with manager Rúben Amorim after just 14 months at the helm, following a turbulent period both on and off the pitch.

The decision, announced less than 24 hours after United’s 1–1 draw with Leeds United, ends a spell that began with promise but ultimately unravelled amid tension with the club’s hierarchy and underwhelming results. Amorim’s departure is yet another sign of instability at Old Trafford during Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first full year overseeing football operations.

Former United midfielder and technical director Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge for Wednesday night’s Premier League clash against Burnley. He will remain on the touchline until a caretaker manager is appointed to see out the remainder of the season, with the club targeting a permanent successor in the summer.

Amorim had recently hinted at frustration behind the scenes. In Friday’s press conference, he cast doubt over the board’s willingness to back him in the January transfer window. His remarks intensified after the Leeds game, when he made a pointed statement about wanting to be a “manager, not just a coach,” and suggested he was prepared to see out his contract quietly if changes weren’t made.

That public show of discontent appears to have been the final straw. United confirmed Amorim had “departed his role as head coach” and thanked him for his service.

“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the official statement read. “This will give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible finish.”

Amorim leaves with a mixed record, having failed to mount a consistent top-four push. The search now begins for yet another new face in the Old Trafford dugout in what has become a recurring theme since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
