Motherwell have asked for clarification from the Scottish Football Association after a late penalty claim was turned down during their 1-0 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.
The flashpoint came in the closing moments of the match when Motherwell midfielder Lukas Fadinger went to ground under a challenge from Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez inside the penalty area. Referee David Dickinson waved play on, with the game restarting quickly and no VAR intervention overturning the decision.
Motherwell head coach Jens Berthel Askou remained convinced his side should have been awarded a spot-kick but stressed that the club would not dwell on the incident. Chief executive Brian Caldwell has since contacted the SFA’s referees department seeking an explanation.
Askou suggested that the decision may have been influenced by limited viewing angles available to officials. “I think it’s probably a question of not having the angles that support what we can clearly see from some of the images we have,” he said. “From wherever you look at it, the situation speaks for itself.”
Despite standing by his view that the wrong call was made, Askou emphasised the importance of moving forward. “There’s nothing we can do about it now. We feel it was a wrong decision and we stand by that, but it doesn’t make sense to spend too much energy on it,” he added.
Motherwell’s focus now turns to upcoming fixtures as they look to respond on the pitch rather than off it. While the decision has left frustration within the club, Askou insisted acceptance is part of the game. “Sometimes things go your way, sometimes they don’t. You have to accept it and move on.”
