Real Madrid and Manchester City will face each other once again in the UEFA Champions League knockout stage after being paired together in the last 16 draw held in Nyon. The clash continues a modern European rivalry that has defined the competition in recent seasons.
This will mark the sixth time since the 2019 20 campaign that the two clubs meet in the knockout rounds. It is also the first time in Champions League history that two teams have faced off in the knockout phase in five consecutive seasons, underlining how closely matched they have been at the highest level.
The two sides already met earlier in the current campaign during the league phase, when Manchester City staged a comeback to defeat the 15 time European champions 2 1 in December. That result added another chapter to a rivalry that has produced dramatic late goals, tactical battles and high intensity football.
City manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the significance of facing a club with Real Madrid’s pedigree, emphasizing how repeated encounters against elite opponents push teams to improve. Real Madrid, meanwhile, remain one of the most decorated sides in European football and consistently thrive in knockout scenarios.
Elsewhere in the draw, holders Paris Saint Germain will take on Chelsea in a repeat of last season’s heated Club World Cup final. Arsenal, who finished top of the league phase with a perfect record, were paired with Bayer Leverkusen and avoided several traditional heavyweights on their side of the bracket.
Bayern Munich will face Atalanta, while Newcastle United meet Barcelona in another standout tie. Liverpool were drawn against Galatasaray and Atletico Madrid will battle Tottenham Hotspur. Norwegian side Bodo Glimt, who impressed during the group stage, will play Sporting.
The bracket structure places Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Atalanta on the same side, meaning only one of those clubs can reach the final. Should City or Madrid progress, they would meet either Bayern or Atalanta in the quarter finals.
The last 16 matches are scheduled for March 10 and 11 with return legs on March 17 and 18. The final will take place on May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
For Manchester City and Real Madrid, familiarity adds extra intrigue. Both squads are stacked with experience, technical quality and depth. Tactical adjustments across two legs will likely determine who advances, as fine margins have often separated them in previous editions.
With the Champions League entering its decisive phase, fans can expect another high intensity encounter between two clubs that have come to define the modern era of European competition.
