South Korea kicked off their AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign in style with a convincing 3 0 victory over Iran in their Group A opener on the Gold Coast.
The 2022 runners up delivered a composed and dominant performance at Robina Stadium, controlling possession from the outset and steadily breaking down a resilient Iranian defense. Goals from Choe Yu ri, Kim Hye ri and Ko Yoo jin secured all three points and sent an early statement to the rest of the tournament field.
South Korea started brightly, dictating tempo and pinning Iran deep inside their own half. Despite creating early chances, they struggled to convert in the opening stages as Iran remained compact and disciplined. The Iranian side, competing amid heightened tensions back home, showed determination and organization to frustrate their opponents for much of the first half.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 37th minute. With Iran temporarily reduced to ten players due to an injury to Afsaneh Chatrenoor, South Korea capitalized. A shot struck the post and rebounded into a dangerous area, where Choe reacted quickest to slot the ball into the net. The goal lifted the pressure and shifted momentum firmly in Korea’s favor.
In the second half, South Korea increased the intensity. Their pressing game forced turnovers and sustained attacks around the Iranian penalty area. Just before the hour mark, Lee Eun young was brought down inside the box, earning a penalty. Captain Kim Hye ri stepped up confidently and converted from the spot to double the lead.
With control established, South Korea continued to push forward rather than sit back. In the 75th minute, Ko Yoo jin rose above the defense to head home the third goal, effectively sealing the result and highlighting the team’s aerial strength.
The victory places South Korea in a strong early position in Group A as they look to build momentum toward another deep tournament run. Their blend of tactical discipline, attacking variety and set piece efficiency was on full display.
For Iran, the defeat marks a challenging start but their defensive organization in the first half offered positives to build upon in upcoming fixtures. Competing on the continental stage provides valuable experience as women’s football continues to grow across Asia.
South Korea’s comprehensive performance reinforces their status as one of the favorites in the competition. With confidence high and goal scorers already finding form, they will aim to carry this energy into their next group match.
