Former England striker Wayne Rooney has praised Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice as a “future captain” of the Three Lions following the Gunners’ 1-0 victory at Everton, which returned them to the top of the Premier League. Rooney, who led England between 2014 and 2017, attended the match at Goodison Park and was impressed by Rice’s all-around performance.
The 26-year-old, who has earned 72 senior caps for England, has worn the national team armband twice, stepping in for Harry Kane in a 2-2 draw with Belgium in March 2024 and a 3-0 win over Wales in October. Rooney highlighted Rice’s versatility, decision-making, and leadership qualities on and off the pitch.
“For me, he’s the one who’s probably waiting for Harry to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show. “He was all over the pitch against Everton. His decision-making – when to pass it, where to pass it, what foot to pass it to – it was a pleasure to watch. He was absolutely incredible.”
Rooney went on to praise Rice’s tactical intelligence and work rate, noting his ability to split centre-backs, recover the ball, support defence, and contribute in attack. He added that Rice’s drive and personality make him the ideal candidate to eventually succeed Kane as England captain.
The England legend concluded that Rice is “irreplaceable” for the national team and his influence at Arsenal and on the international stage underscores his growing status as one of the country’s most important players.
