Antoine Griezmann delays possible MLS move as Atletico Madrid focus on Copa del Rey final

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has reportedly decided to delay a potential move to Major League Soccer, choosing instead to remain focused on the remainder of the season with the Spanish club.

The French forward had been linked with a transfer to Orlando City in recent weeks, with discussions reportedly centered around a move during the MLS spring transfer window. However, new developments suggest that the deal will not move forward at this stage of the season.

The decision appears to be influenced by Atletico Madrid’s strong run in domestic competition. The club recently secured a place in the Copa del Rey final after defeating Barcelona in a dramatic semifinal series that ended with a 4 to 3 aggregate victory.

With the final scheduled for April 18, Griezmann is expected to remain fully committed to Atletico as the team pushes to secure a major trophy. Despite his remarkable record at the club, the French attacker has yet to win a major domestic title during his time with Atletico Madrid.

Griezmann holds the record as the club’s all time leading goal scorer with more than 200 goals across all competitions. His impact on the team has been significant across two separate spells with Atletico, first between 2014 and 2019 and again since returning to the club in 2021.

Now 34 years old, Griezmann continues to play an important role in Atletico’s attacking lineup. Known for his creativity, movement and finishing ability, he has remained one of the most influential players in Spanish football over the past decade.

A move to Major League Soccer had been widely discussed as a possible next step in his career, particularly as several European stars in their later years have chosen to join clubs in the United States. Orlando City was reportedly preparing an offer that would bring the French international to Florida if a deal could be completed before the MLS transfer deadline in late March.

For now, that timeline appears unlikely as Griezmann prioritizes Atletico Madrid’s push for silverware. The team’s presence in the Copa del Rey final has given supporters renewed hope of ending a trophy drought during his time with the club.

Beyond club football, Griezmann also enjoyed a highly successful international career with France before announcing his retirement from international competition in 2024. He played a key role in France’s victory at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament at the 2016 European Championship after leading the scoring charts.

Across his professional career, Griezmann has accumulated nearly 300 goals in domestic competitions, highlighting his consistency as one of Europe’s top attacking players. His record includes hundreds of appearances in La Liga and major European competitions.

Although the possibility of a move to the United States has not been ruled out entirely, the latest reports suggest that any transfer discussions may now shift to a later stage, potentially after the current season concludes.
