Atletico Madrid produced a devastating first-half display to defeat FC Barcelona 4 0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, putting one foot firmly in the final in Seville.

Diego Simeone’s side needed just 45 ruthless minutes at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano to dismantle the holders. Barcelona dominated possession throughout the opening period, but it was Atletico’s precision, pace, and clinical finishing that defined the night.

The breakthrough came dramatically within six minutes. A routine back pass from Eric Garcia appeared harmless, yet goalkeeper Joan Garcia misjudged his touch, allowing the ball to slip under his boot and trickle over the line despite a desperate attempt to recover. It was a costly error that set the tone for what followed.

Atletico doubled their lead eight minutes later with a flowing move that exposed Barcelona’s defensive gaps. Ademola Lookman gathered a long pass on the left and linked up with Julian Alvarez, who quickly switched play to Nahuel Molina. The right back threaded a clever ball into the path of Antoine Griezmann, and the French forward calmly steered his finish into the bottom corner.

Barcelona continued to control the ball but struggled to contain Atletico’s counterattacks. The third goal arrived in the 33rd minute when Giuliano Simeone surged down the right flank and delivered a low cross. Alvarez showed composure to square the ball across the area for Lookman, who finished confidently into the corner.

Hansi Flick reacted by introducing Robert Lewandowski before halftime, hoping to spark a response. Instead, Atletico struck again before the interval. Lookman and Alvarez combined once more, and the Argentine forward unleashed a powerful shot from just inside the box that flew into the top corner, capping a devastating first-half performance.

Despite holding nearly 70 percent possession before the break, Barcelona were unable to translate control into clear chances. Atletico’s defensive structure remained compact, and their transitions were sharp and direct. Goalkeeper Juan Musso was called into action early in the second half, denying Fermin Lopez as Barcelona searched for any foothold in the tie.

With a four-goal cushion heading into the return leg at Camp Nou on March 3, Atletico have taken a giant step toward the final. Barcelona now faces a monumental challenge to overturn the deficit against a side that looks disciplined, aggressive, and lethal on the counter. For Simeone’s team, the performance was a statement of intent in a season where silverware remains firmly in sight.
