Chelsea Launch Investigation After Bottle Thrown at Villa Bench

Chelsea have launched an investigation after a bottle was thrown towards the Aston Villa bench following their 2-1 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge.

The incident occurred after the final whistle on Saturday as Villa staff and players were celebrating the result. An open plastic bottle was thrown in the direction of the visiting bench, splashing liquid believed to be water over members of the Villa delegation.

Television footage showed one Villa staff member pointing towards the section of the stadium from which the bottle appeared to have been thrown. That area seemed to include both Chelsea supporters and club staff, though it remains unclear who was responsible.

Chelsea have confirmed they are investigating the matter but have not made an official statement at this stage.

It is also unclear whether match referee Stuart Attwell or his officiating team witnessed the incident, or whether it will be included in the referee’s official report. The Football Association has been contacted for comment.

On the pitch, Villa came from behind to secure the win after substitute Ollie Watkins scored twice in the second half, cancelling out João Pedro’s first-half opener for Chelsea.

The victory extended Villa’s winning run to a club-record 11 consecutive wins in all competitions. Unai Emery’s side now sit third in the Premier League table, three points behind leaders Arsenal.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are fifth in the table heading into the remainder of the weekend’s fixtures.
