Pep Guardiola has called on his Manchester City players to keep their “heads up” as they prepare for a crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday. The City manager was in reflective mood after a frustrating goalless draw away to Sunderland, which saw his side lose further ground in the title race.

The result leaves City second in the table, now four points adrift of leaders Arsenal. While the dropped points were disappointing, Guardiola remained calm, praising Sunderland’s performance and his own team’s effort in difficult circumstances.

“I’ll take the point against this team at this stadium,” Guardiola said post-match. “They are strong, aggressive, and very organised. It was a really good game of football one we could have won, but we didn’t lose. Heads up, we go again.”

The Premier League champions lacked their usual cutting edge despite dominating possession, and missed opportunities from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden proved costly. Guardiola admitted his side “lacked rhythm” in the final third but refused to criticise individual players.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s visit from Chelsea, who arrive at the Etihad after parting ways with Enzo Maresca. The London club is in transition under interim coach Calum McFarlane, but Guardiola warned that unpredictability could make them dangerous.

“When a team changes manager, there’s always a reaction,” he said. “We have to be ready.”

With Arsenal continuing to show consistency, Guardiola knows his team can ill afford many more missteps. But the Catalan remains confident in his squad’s mentality as the season enters a decisive phase.

“It’s not about being perfect every week,” he added. “It’s about staying together, competing, and finding the moments. This is far from over.”
