Former England footballer Joey Barton has been remanded in custody after appearing at Liverpool Magistrates Court in connection with an alleged assault at a golf club in Merseyside. The 43 year old ex midfielder is accused alongside 50 year old Gary O Grady of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on former non league football manager Kevin Lynch. The incident is alleged to have taken place at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Sunday evening, prompting police to respond to reports of a serious altercation at the venue.

According to details presented in court, emergency services were called to the golf club shortly after nine in the evening following reports that a man had been attacked. Prosecutors stated that the alleged victim, Kevin Lynch, sustained significant injuries and was receiving treatment in hospital. Medical concerns raised during the hearing indicated that the injuries could potentially affect his eyesight and may result in long term damage. Authorities confirmed that Lynch remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition as investigations into the incident continue.

Barton and O Grady have both been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, one of the most serious assault charges under British law. During the hearing it was stated that both defendants strongly deny the allegations. Neither man was required to enter a formal plea at this stage of the legal process. The court also heard that the alleged assault occurred during an incident involving a golf club at the venue, though full details surrounding the confrontation have yet to be presented publicly.

District Judge James Hatton denied Barton’s request for bail following the hearing, meaning the former footballer will remain in custody until the next stage of proceedings. O Grady, however, was granted bail with strict conditions imposed by the court. These conditions include a ban on entering Huyton and Prescot Golf Club and restrictions preventing him from contacting the alleged victim or a named witness connected to the case.

During the hearing prosecutors outlined concerns about the severity of the injuries suffered by Lynch. The court was told that the victim may face irreversible damage to his eyesight depending on the outcome of medical treatment. Legal representatives emphasized that the case involves serious allegations and requires further investigation before a full trial process begins.

Barton appeared in court wearing a blue jumper along with grey trousers and glasses and remained largely expressionless as the judge delivered the decision to remand him in custody. The former footballer did not visibly react to the ruling while proceedings continued. The courtroom session focused mainly on the details of the charges and the conditions of bail for the two defendants.

Both Barton and O Grady are scheduled to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on April seven for a plea and trial preparation hearing where the case will move to the next stage of the judicial process. The upcoming hearing will determine how the trial will proceed and whether the defendants will formally enter pleas in response to the charges brought against them.

Joey Barton is widely known for his career as a professional footballer, having played for several clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Burnley and Rangers in Scotland. After retiring from professional football in 2017 he moved into coaching and management roles. The latest legal developments have drawn attention across the football community as the case continues through the British court system.
