Lebanon has moved to reshape its national team setup with the appointment of Madjid Bougherra as head coach, marking a significant step ahead of upcoming Asian Cup qualification fixtures. The national football association confirmed the decision on Thursday, with local reports indicating the former Algeria international has agreed to a four year contract. The appointment brings proven international experience to the role at a time when Lebanon is targeting stability and progress on the continental stage. Bougherra arrives with a strong reputation forged through both his playing and coaching careers, and expectations are high that his leadership can provide renewed structure and ambition. His immediate focus will be on guiding the squad through the final stages of qualification, where margins remain tight, and consistency will be crucial.

The 43 year old previously coached Algeria’s A team and achieved notable success by winning the Arab Cup in 2021, before stepping down after failing to defend the title in Qatar late last year. As a player, Bougherra enjoyed a distinguished international career, captaining Algeria at the 2014 World Cup and also representing his country at the 2010 finals. His club career took him across multiple leagues, including spells in England and Scotland, where he developed a reputation as a commanding central defender. That blend of international tournament exposure and leadership experience is seen as a key asset for Lebanon as they aim to compete more effectively against regional rivals.

Bougherra’s first test in charge will come at the end of March, when Lebanon faces Yemen in an Asian Cup qualifier in Qatar. A draw will be enough to secure qualification for the 2027 finals in Saudi Arabia, placing immediate pressure on the new coach to deliver results quickly. The timing of the appointment suggests a clear focus on short term objectives alongside a longer term vision for development. For Lebanon, the arrival of a coach with World Cup and continental success on his resume signals intent to raise standards and build momentum, both in qualification campaigns and beyond.
