Oxford United Fan Ends 675 Day Beard Challenge After Club Finally Wins Penalty

An Oxford United supporter has finally shaved his beard after nearly two years of waiting for his team to be awarded another penalty, bringing an unusual football related challenge to an end. The fan, Gary Hudson, had promised not to shave his beard until Oxford United received another spot kick in a competitive match. What began as a lighthearted promise eventually turned into a long running charity effort that lasted 675 days and attracted attention among supporters of the English Championship club.

Hudson, who is widely known among Oxford fans by the nickname Fred Big Ox, attended matches during the challenge wearing a bright yellow wig and a distinctive blue beard. The colourful appearance became part of his effort to raise funds and awareness for a mental health charity while waiting for the moment that would allow him to finally shave his real beard. Over the course of the challenge he continued supporting his team at the Kassam Stadium while sharing updates about the growing beard and the charity campaign with fellow fans.

The unusual wait was linked to Oxford United’s long period without being awarded a penalty during competitive matches. The club had not received a spot kick since May 2024 when midfielder Cameron Brannagan converted from the penalty spot in a League One promotion play off match against Peterborough United. That goal came during a 1 1 draw in the semi finals of the promotion playoffs. After that moment Oxford went more than a year and a half without being given another penalty, extending Hudson’s beard growing challenge far beyond what many supporters originally expected.

The long wait finally ended when Oxford United were awarded a penalty during their match against Charlton Athletic at the Kassam Stadium. Once again it was Cameron Brannagan who stepped forward to take the spot kick, successfully converting the opportunity during a match that eventually finished in a 1 1 draw. For Hudson and many fans in attendance the penalty marked a humorous but memorable moment as it brought an end to the beard challenge that had become part of the club’s supporter culture.

Hudson celebrated the moment during the match by tossing his colourful wig and fake beard into the air in excitement as the stadium crowd reacted to the rare penalty decision. The moment quickly spread among supporters who had followed the unusual challenge over the previous months. After the match Hudson prepared to complete the final stage of the challenge by removing his real beard, something he had promised to do only once Oxford United finally received another penalty during a competitive game.

The beard was eventually shaved during a live radio appearance, marking the official conclusion of the charity challenge. Hudson later joked that the most surprising moment after shaving was when friends failed to recognise him without the beard that had become part of his identity over the past two years. His story has become a lighthearted reminder of the creativity and dedication often shown by football supporters who find unique ways to support their clubs while raising awareness for charitable causes.
