Senegal Cruise Past Botswana as Nicolas Jackson Shines in Afcon Opener

Senegal national football team made an emphatic start to their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a commanding 3–0 victory over Botswana national football team, as Nicolas Jackson struck twice in a dominant Group D display.

Played in challenging conditions with heavy rain throughout much of the match, the contest was largely one way. Senegal, champions in 2021, controlled possession and tempo from the opening minutes, repeatedly testing Botswana’s defensive resolve with sustained attacking pressure.

Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko produced a series of impressive early saves to keep his side in contention. He denied efforts from high profile attackers including Sadio Mane and Iliman Ndiaye, frustrating Senegal during the opening stages.

The breakthrough arrived shortly before half time when Jackson capitalised on a precise delivery from full back Ismail Jakobs, finishing confidently after finding space inside the penalty area. The goal reflected Senegal’s growing dominance and gave them deserved control at the interval.

Jackson doubled his tally after the restart with a composed finish, underlining his sharpness and movement in the final third. The forward, currently enjoying a productive loan spell away from Chelsea, remained a constant threat and was central to Senegal’s attacking rhythm.

As Botswana struggled to gain any foothold, Senegal continued to push forward. Substitute Cherif Ndiaye added a third goal late on, putting the result beyond doubt and rounding off a comprehensive performance.

Botswana rarely troubled Senegal’s defence and will need a marked improvement in their next outing as they look to secure their first ever Afcon victory. Senegal, meanwhile, sit confidently at the top of Group D on goal difference and will approach their next fixture with momentum and belief.
