Sergio Ramos is weighing his next move after leaving Mexican side Monterrey, with reports suggesting the veteran defender has offered himself to Olympique de Marseille as he looks to continue his career in Europe. The 39 year old is currently without a club after departing Monterrey on a free transfer following a single season in Liga MX.
Ramos confirmed in December that his final appearance for Monterrey came in their play off semi final defeat to Toluca, a result that ended both the club’s campaign and his brief spell in Mexico. Speaking after the match, the former Spain captain acknowledged that the defeat was painful, particularly given the circumstances. He pointed to a lack of intensity and control in the first half as decisive factors, adding that while losing is part of football, the manner of the performance mattered deeply to him.
Despite his age, Ramos remains determined to compete at the highest possible level. During the 2025 calendar year, he made 32 competitive appearances for Monterrey, scoring seven goals and receiving one red card. His output highlighted that he still offers a threat at set pieces and brings leadership on the pitch, qualities that continue to attract attention from clubs across different leagues.
Initial expectations had suggested a possible return to Sevilla, where Ramos began his professional career. However, that option has become complicated due to his involvement in a potential takeover bid for the club. Reports indicate that Ramos is part of a consortium seeking to acquire Sevilla, which would prevent him from registering as a player should the deal progress.
The proposed acquisition is said to be worth more than 400 million euros and involves Argentine entrepreneur Martin Ink, the chief executive of Five Eleven Capital, an investment group focused on football assets. An exclusivity period has reportedly begun, allowing the group to examine Sevilla’s financial accounts before attempting to finalize any agreement. With multiple other interested parties also linked to the club, the process is expected to be complex and time consuming.
While those discussions continue, Ramos is keeping his playing options open, which has led to speculation about Marseille. The Ligue 1 side currently sits third in the table, trailing leaders Paris Saint-Germain by nine points, andise assessing how best to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
However, a move to southern France appears far from certain. Reports suggest that Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi is not actively pushing for Ramos’ signature. Concerns may include the defender’s age, wage expectations, and how he would fit into the club’s tactical plans, despite his vast experience and winning pedigree.
