St. Louis CITY SC have bolstered their attacking options for the 2026 Major League Soccer campaign by acquiring Venezuelan international forward Sergio Córdova on a loan deal from Swiss Super League club BSC Young Boys. The 28-year-old striker arrives in the United States on a contract that runs through June 30, 2026, with the MLS club holding an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan period.

Córdova, who will join St. Louis as a Designated Player and fill an international roster spot, brings a wealth of global experience to the club. Before heading to Switzerland, he featured across Europe and North America, including notable spells in Germany’s Bundesliga with FC Augsburg and Arminia Bielefeld, in Turkey, Russia and earlier in MLS with Real Salt Lake and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

St. Louis City’s sporting director Corey Wray expressed optimism about Córdova’s arrival, highlighting the Venezuelan’s movement, link-up play and ability to stretch defences as key attributes that fit the club’s tactical approach. Wray also noted that the loan offers the team valuable depth up front while preserving flexibility for future roster planning.

Chelsea and European scouts first took notice of Córdova during his breakthrough MLS season with Real Salt Lake, where he finished as one of the club’s top scorers. His subsequent stint with the Vancouver Whitecaps saw mixed fortunes, but his proven scoring ability at MLS level makes him a valuable addition to St. Louis’ frontline.

Córdova’s loan deal comes as St. Louis City look to build on last season’s strong performances and deepen their squad for a competitive push in MLS. With the forward roster often stretched over long league campaigns, his presence is expected to provide extra firepower and tactical variety for head coach Bradley Carnell.

As a designated player, Córdova joins compatriots and former MLS stars in the club’s history who have made significant impacts in the league. His versatility and experience could be especially valuable in key matches where dynamic attacking options are needed.

The Venezuelan international has won senior caps for his national team and is widely regarded as a technically gifted forward with the ability to create chances and score in tight situations. Fans and pundits will be watching closely to see how quickly he adapts to his new surroundings at CITY SC.

Córdova’s addition reflects St. Louis City’s continued ambition to build a competitive squad capable of challenging at the top end of Major League Soccer while maintaining balance under MLS’s complex roster rules.
