Union and FC Cincinnati Dominate as Champions Cup First Legs Set the Tone

Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati took commanding steps toward the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 with emphatic first leg victories, while Vancouver Whitecaps were left frustrated despite controlling their matchup in Costa Rica.

Philadelphia delivered one of the standout performances of the round, thrashing Defence Force 5 0 in Port of Spain. After a competitive opening half hour, the Union turned the game into a one sided contest. Milan Iloski opened the scoring in the 30th minute with a precise free kick that curled inside the near post. Just two minutes later, Ezekiel Alladoh doubled the advantage with a powerful header.

The second half belonged entirely to the MLS side. Olwethu Makhanya rose high to head in Iloski’s corner in the 64th minute, stretching the lead to three. Substitute Bruno Damiani then made an immediate impact, scoring twice. He first converted a sharp assist from Cavan Sullivan before calmly dispatching a penalty to cap a dominant display.

Philadelphia registered eight shots on target compared to just one from Defence Force. With a five goal cushion heading into the return leg in Chester, they are firmly in control of the tie and on course for a potential clash with Mexican giants Club America in the next round.

FC Cincinnati were equally impressive in the Dominican Republic, defeating O and M FC 4 0 in Santiago de los Caballeros. The Orange and Blue started strongly, with Tom Barlow firing in a rebound in the 12th minute to set the tempo. Kevin Denkey added a second before halftime, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot home from distance.

In the closing stages, substitute Ayoub Jabbari put the result beyond doubt. He scored from a tight angle in the 86th minute before adding another in stoppage time, finishing clinically from close range. Cincinnati now return home with a four goal advantage and clear momentum as they look ahead to a possible showdown with Tigres UANL.

Vancouver Whitecaps, however, were unable to translate dominance into goals in a scoreless draw against Cartagines in Costa Rica. The Canadian side controlled possession for long spells and outshot their opponents 17 7, including five efforts on target. Despite the pressure, they could not break through, leaving the tie finely balanced heading into the decisive second leg in Vancouver.

With strong performances from MLS clubs across the board, the opening legs have set up intriguing return fixtures as teams chase places in the Champions Cup last 16.
