Philadelphia Union have made a significant move in the MLS transfer market by finalizing the permanent signing of forward Agustín Anello from Uruguayan side Boston River. The deal, confirmed by the club this week, sees the 23-year-old attacker inked to a contract that guarantees his stay through the 2028-29 season, with a club option to extend into 2029-30. This long-term commitment reflects the team’s ambition to build attacking depth and inject fresh energy at the forefront of their frontline.

Anello’s arrival in Philadelphia comes after a productive stint in South America, where he impressed for Boston River in Uruguay’s top flight. In the 2025 Clausura campaign, he netted six goals and provided one assist across 14 appearances, showcasing his ability to influence matches in a league known for its competitive balance and physical intensity. His performances there have helped generate excitement among Union fans eager to see what he can bring to the club’s offensive play.

Originally from Miami, Florida, Anello’s football journey has taken him across multiple countries and competitive environments. He developed his foundational skills in Spain with youth teams like Cornellà and RCD Espanyol before taking his first steps into professional football in Belgium with Lommel SK in 2021. Over two seasons with Lommel, he made 42 appearances and laid the groundwork for subsequent moves that broadened his tactical understanding and on-field experience.

Beyond his club career, Anello has also dipped into international football. He has worn U.S. colors at youth level, earning appearances for the United States Under-23 team, which adds a layer of prestige and developmental promise to his profile. His status as a domestic player in MLS also gives the Union added roster flexibility, a valuable trait under league squad rules.

Philadelphia’s head coach Bradley Carnell expressed enthusiasm about bringing Anello into the squad, highlighting his versatility and the upward trajectory of his career. Carnell pointed to the player’s blend of European development and South American breakthrough as qualities that align with the club’s broader tactical vision. The coaching staff believe Anello’s adaptability and work rate will help him fit seamlessly into various attacking roles this season.

Anello’s signing arrives at a key moment for the Union as they prepare to launch their MLS campaign later this month. Philadelphia, coming off a Supporters’ Shield-winning season, are aiming to build on their recent success by adding fresh talent capable of elevating their offensive options. With Anello now part of the roster, fans will be watching closely to see how he contributes in preseason and competitive matches.
