‘You Guys Kill Me’: Wilfried Nancy Defends Celtic Tenure Ahead of Crucial Old Firm Clash

Under-pressure Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has hit back at media criticism ahead of Saturday’s high-stakes Old Firm derby against Rangers, insisting that context is being ignored in assessments of his short time in charge.

Speaking candidly to reporters, Nancy said, “You guys kill me,” as he responded to growing scrutiny following Celtic’s 2–0 defeat to Motherwell on Tuesday. The loss marked his fifth in just seven games since taking the reins from Brendan Rodgers, sparking intense speculation that his job could be at risk if Celtic fail to beat their fiercest rivals this weekend.

“I know what this club means and what this game means,” Nancy said. “But people need to look at the full picture. It’s been a challenging start, yes, but we are working every day to build something sustainable.”

Nancy, who arrived from MLS side Columbus Crew in November, has faced criticism for poor results and uninspired performances, with Tuesday’s display at Fir Park described by local media as “lifeless.” Celtic currently sit behind league leaders Hearts and only narrowly ahead of Rangers, who would go level on points with a win at Celtic Park.

Despite Rangers’ own inconsistent form, pressure on Nancy is significantly higher. Club insiders have reportedly warned that defeat in the derby could trigger immediate board-level discussions about his future.

Still, the Frenchman remains defiant. “I didn’t come here expecting it to be easy. I came to take on a challenge,” he said. “We know what’s at stake and we’re ready to fight.”

The Old Firm clash now carries added weight, not just for the standings, but for the future of Celtic’s season and potentially Nancy’s role at the club.
