Aston Villa secured an important 1 0 away victory against Lille in the first leg of their Europa League round of sixteen clash after Ollie Watkins scored the decisive goal in the second half. The English club delivered a disciplined performance at the Decathlon Arena in France where both teams struggled to create clear chances during a cautious opening period. Villa’s ability to stay organised at the back and capitalise on a key attacking moment proved decisive. The result gives the Premier League side a narrow advantage heading into the return leg next week where they will aim to finish the job and secure a place in the quarter finals of the competition.
The first half saw limited attacking action as both teams approached the match carefully. Lille came closest late in the half when Romain Perraud attempted a long range effort that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez struggled to hold. Defender Pau Torres reacted quickly to clear the loose ball before the French side could take advantage. Moments earlier Lille striker Olivier Giroud had also threatened the Villa defence but his glancing header from close range failed to trouble the goalkeeper. The tense opening stages reflected the importance of the tie as both sides focused on maintaining defensive stability rather than taking early attacking risks.
Aston Villa broke the deadlock six minutes after the restart with a well executed attacking move that highlighted their ability to transition quickly. Ezri Konsa launched a long pass forward which Emiliano Buendia managed to flick on inside the penalty area. Watkins timed his run perfectly and guided a looping header over the advancing goalkeeper to score his first European goal of the season. The goal shifted momentum in Villa’s favour and they nearly doubled their lead shortly afterward when Amadou Onana struck a curling shot from outside the penalty area that clipped the top of the crossbar. Lille attempted to respond but Martinez produced a solid save to deny Matias Fernandez Pardo.
In another Europa League encounter Bologna and Roma played out a competitive 1 1 draw in an all Italian contest that remained open until the final minutes. Bologna took the lead shortly after the break when Jonathan Rowe produced an impressive run into the box before setting up Federico Bernardeschi who finished with a precise first time strike that hit the far post before crossing the line. Roma responded with increasing pressure and eventually found an equaliser in the seventy first minute when Lorenzo Pellegrini finished from close range after Donyell Malen created the chance with a quick pass across the goal area.
Both teams had further opportunities to claim a late victory but were denied by the woodwork and defensive resilience. Malen struck the post again during a Roma attack while Martin Vitik came close with a powerful header from a free kick that crashed against the crossbar. Elsewhere Porto claimed a 2 1 victory against Stuttgart after goals from Terem Moffi and young midfielder Rodrigo Mora gave the Portuguese side early control. Stuttgart managed to pull one goal back before halftime but were unable to find an equaliser. Panathinaikos also secured a dramatic win against Real Betis after Vicente Taborda converted a late penalty despite the Greek side playing the final half hour with ten men.
